Search this question and you will find confident salary figures. Treat them carefully: almost none are sourced, and compensation in Indian financial services varies so widely by employer, city, role and experience that an "average NISM salary" is close to meaningless.
What can be stated precisely is which certification is required for which role. That is the genuinely useful half of the question, so that is what this covers.
Which certification opens which door
| Certification | Role it is required for | Typical employer |
|---|---|---|
| Series V-A | Distributing mutual funds (the ARN route) | AMCs, banks, distributors, independent practice |
| Series VIII | Dealing in equity derivatives | Brokers, trading members |
| Series XV | Working as a research analyst | Research houses, broking research desks |
| Series X-A + X-B | Registered Investment Adviser | Advisory firms, independent practice |
| Series VI | Depository operations | Depository participants — brokers, banks |
| Series XVI | Commodity derivatives | Commodity broking members |
| Series XXI-B | Managing portfolios under PMS | Registered portfolio managers |

What the certification actually does
A certification makes you eligible. It does not make you employed — and on a mandated role, everyone else applying holds it too.
Three things it does reliably:
It removes a legal barrier. For a mandated role you cannot hold the position without it. That is absolute, and it is the whole value.
It is verifiable and universally recognised. NISM is a SEBI-established institution, so the credential means the same thing to every employer in the Indian securities market. It needs no explaining on a CV.
It gives structured domain coverage. For people who came into finance sideways — from operations, from sales, from an unrelated degree — the workbooks fill real gaps.
What it does not do
It is not a differentiator for mandated roles. If the job requires Series V-A, every shortlisted candidate has Series V-A. What differentiates is experience, track record and interview.
It does not substitute for experience. Nobody manages a portfolio because they passed XXI-B.
It does not come with a salary figure. Compensation depends on the employer, the city, the role and what you bring beyond the certificate. Any page telling you a NISM certification "gets you ₹X lakh" is guessing, and the confident ones are guessing hardest.
Where certification genuinely changes the picture
Two situations where it moves the needle more than usual:
Entering the industry. Holding the certification a role requires before you apply removes the employer's cost and delay of getting you certified. For entry-level hiring, that is a real advantage — a candidate who can start producing immediately against one who cannot for a month.
Going independent. For a distributor or adviser building their own practice, the certification is not a hiring signal at all — it is the licence to operate. Here it is not helping you get a job; it is the job's precondition.
Stacking certifications
Holding more than one is only useful when it maps to work you will actually do:
- V-A + IC 38 — mutual funds plus insurance. The most common pairing for retail advisers, since these are the two products clients ask about most. See our IC 38 guide.
- X-A + X-B — both required for the adviser route, so this is not a choice. See X-A vs X-B.
- XV + XXI-B — research and portfolio management, a natural progression on the institutional side.
Collecting certifications for their own sake is an expensive hobby. Each is a fee, a few weeks, and a renewal obligation every three years — see validity and renewal.
So what should you do?
- Identify the role you want, then find the certification it requires. Not the reverse.
- Confirm the requirement with SEBI or the employer. It is role-dependent and we cannot confirm it for you.
- Sit it once. A failed attempt costs the full fee again — see exam fees.
- Build the thing the certificate does not give you — the experience and evidence that actually differentiates you once everyone in the room is equally certified.
